GENERAL
INFORMATION:

 

The Schilling School for Gifted Children is an independent coeducational institution founded in 1997, chartered by the Ohio Department of Education, and maintaining membership in the Ohio Association of Independent Schools. Nationally, it is one of only two schools serving gifted students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

FACULTY:

Our faculty is comprised of gifted adults who are experienced teachers, subject specialists, and practitioners in their fields of expertise, many of whom are currently teaching at local universities.

CURRICULUM:

Both Lower School and Upper School academic programs are accelerated. All academic courses at the Upper School level are considered honors courses and many are taught at the college level. (i.e. Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Advanced Chinese, Asian Literature and History) Foreign language classes begin in kindergarten and continue through high school. 100% of Schilling graduates go on to college with 31% of Schilling alumni selected as National Merit Finalists and Commended Students.

SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The Schilling School has the highest average SAT score among Greater Cincinnati public and private high schools (Cincinnati Magazine – April 2003). 

The Ohio Department of Education and the Canadian Department of Education requested permission to use the Schilling curriculum as a model.               

Newsweek Magazine’s 1998 SCORE! Publication included a picture of a Schilling student taken in class during an interview regarding giftedness. 

Special television reports focusing on gifted children have featured The Schilling School. 

The school submitted 17 artistically decorated theme pigs, (more pigs than any other school in Cincinnati) to the Little Pig Gig, a “piggyback” to Cincinnati’s phenomenally successful Big Pig Gig.

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Two Schilling students have received perfect scores in the National Latin Exam. 

A board game patent was awarded to a Schilling Lower School student, possibly the youngest patent holder in American history.

Four Schilling writers from grades 2, 8 and 9 have been published. 

Three Schilling students received full scholarships to attend the Freedoms Foundation Camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. 

Two Schilling students have been selected to attend the first Young Patriots Leadership Conference in Cincinnati. 

Two Rotary International Exchange students were selected from Schilling:  one studied in Taiwan for the 2001-2002 school year, one of only three of the 36 sponsored students from   around the world selected to attend the top school in Taipei, and one studied in Japan for the 2003-2004 school year. 

Upper level science students from Schilling attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science Conference in Washington, DC, and spent time with Stephen J.   Gould, whose books had been studied in class and with whom they had corresponded.

FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Our Math/Science Department chair, who teaches Calculus, Differential Equations, Advanced Physical Mathematics, and Differential Phenomena, was nominated for a Nobel Prize.  This brought him international acclaim, with his work featured in scientific books and international journals, including cover articles in Science and Naturwissenschaften.  He has more than 50 scientific publications to his credit and is internationally regarded as an expert in Auger spectroscopy.   

Our Language Arts/Social Studies chair, who teaches American Literature and History and Communication Arts, is an experienced teacher with journalistic and freelance writing experience who has run his own print communications business.

Our Environmental Science teacher, a researcher at the University of Cincinnati Medical School, has taught medical students and undergraduates and finds teaching gifted children at the Schilling School more stimulating intellectually. 

Our U.S. Government and Law and Economics teacher is an attorney who comes to us from private practice. 

Our Innovation and Creativity teacher is a retired professional engineer who received the highest engineering career award and taught graduate and undergraduate courses. 

Our Comparative Religion teacher, prior to moving to the Greater Cincinnati area, was the denominational chaplain at Yale University. 

Our Architecture teacher has been the Director of the School of Architecture and Interior Design of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. 

Our faculty includes professional artists and practitioners who have their own studios and businesses. 

Our faculty has graduated from top tier colleges and universities, including Princeton, Yale, Penn, Columbia, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Vanderbilt, Emory, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Brandeis, Furman, University of California San Diego, and University of Illinois.                               

Our faculty has taught at Yale, Penn, Brown, Michigan, Purdue, Indiana University, University of California Santa Barbara, U.S. Army, Northern Kentucky University, University of Toledo, Miami University and the University of Cincinnati.
